A Farewell to Freya — and the Art That Captures Her Spirit Forever

When we heard the news about the Calgary Zoo's beloved cougar, we felt it deeply. Here's why.

Some art is made. And some art, it turns out, is made for a reason that only becomes clear later.

When Mys Nyx painted Silent Hunter — her breathtaking original depicting a mountain lion stalking through a snow-laden winter forest — it was a celebration of the cougar as nature's apex predator: powerful, graceful, and hauntingly beautiful. What none of us knew at the time was that the painting would take on a deeper meaning.

The Calgary Zoo recently said farewell to Freya, their beloved female cougar, who passed away at 15 years old — a remarkable age that speaks to the exceptional care she received throughout her life. Freya arrived at the zoo in 2010 alongside her brother Odin, both orphaned in the wild in British Columbia the year before. Over the years, she became a fixture of the zoo and a favourite among staff, volunteers, and the countless visitors who had the chance to stand before her and feel — even briefly — the quiet power of one of North America's most magnificent wild cats.

When we heard the news, we looked at Silent Hunter differently.

The Painting

Silent Hunter - Original
$6,000.00

"Silent Hunter" is a breathtaking limited-edition original painting that captures the stealthy grace and raw power of a mountain lion (cougar/puma) stalking through a snow-laden winter forest. This one-of-a-kind masterpiece (limited edition 1/1) measures 36 inches high by 27 inches wide on a premium 2-inch deep gallery-wrapped canvas, offering a bold, ready-to-hang presence with deep dimensional impact—no frame required.

The majestic cat prowls forward in mid-stride, piercing green eyes locked on its unseen prey, muscles taut beneath a richly detailed tawny coat dusted with fresh snow. Surrounding evergreens are blanketed in heavy white, their branches glistening under a soft, diffused winter light, while delicate snowflakes drift through the air, adding an ethereal sense of quiet motion and isolation.

Primarily executed in acrylic for vibrant color fidelity and crisp detail, the work is enhanced with select applications of oil paint to build luxurious texture and subtle sheen across the fur, snow, and shadowed foliage. Thick, glossy black paint is layered into the tree trunks and branches, creating a striking contrast that makes the darkness feel wet, reflective, and almost alive. Genuine plexiglass "ice" elements are meticulously integrated into the snow-covered branches and foreground, catching and refracting light to mimic real frozen crystals—adding a sparkling, tactile realism that shifts beautifully under different angles and lighting.

A powerful statement piece blending wildlife realism, atmospheric winter drama, and opulent mixed-media craftsmanship, "Silent Hunter" evokes themes of solitude, primal instinct, and the serene beauty of nature’s apex predator. Signed "NYX" and dated '25. Ideal for collectors drawn to big-cat art, winter wilderness scenes, symbolic strength, and richly embellished fine-art originals.

Silent Hunter is a 36" × 27" mixed-media original on gallery-wrapped canvas — the only one of its kind. Mys Nyx painted the cougar mid-stride, piercing green eyes fixed forward, muscles taut beneath a tawny coat dusted with fresh snow. The surrounding evergreens glow under soft winter light, and genuine plexiglass elements embedded in the snow-covered branches catch and refract light like real frozen crystals — a detail that shifts and shimmers as you move around the piece.

It is, in every sense, a portrait of a creature in its element: silent, sovereign, and impossible to look away from.

That's what Freya was, too.

Why It Matters

Cougars are rarely in the spotlight. They are solitary by nature — animals of the shadows, the treeline, the in-between places. Freya spent 14 years as a gentle ambassador for her species, helping people connect with an animal they might never encounter in the wild. That kind of quiet impact is hard to measure, but it's real.

Art does something similar. Silent Hunter doesn't just depict a cougar — it makes you feel what it would mean to share a world with one. That feeling of awe, of respect for something wild and irreplaceable, is exactly what Freya inspired in everyone who visited her.
